406 - Sympathizing with Sisyphus: Dealing with Inherited or Intransigent Problems in College and University Archives

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Inspired by a Princeton professor's "CV of Failure," this Ignite! session focuses on archival work that went wrong, frustrated us, was inherited and perhaps intractable, or some combination of these. It features inherited long-standing or persistent problems and what was done to address them, reporting out all the tragic variations. Topics include microfilm morass, records management without staff, unreliable legacy data, insatiable social media, haphazard homegrown description systems, recurring backlogs, and building a program from scratch.

Linke: Sympathizing with Sisyphus: Dealing with Inherited or Intransigent Problems in College and University Archives
Betts: The Challenges of Diffuse Records Management
Graham: Closing the Backlog: Using Records Management Reforms and Minimal Processing to Ensure Immediate Access to New Accessions
Mora: Starting (?) a Program at an Established Institution
Nielsen: 2000 Reels of Problematic Microfilm as Sole Copy of University Records
Skene: UAs, PDs, and RPs: Tthe Wilderness of Haphazard Description
Wilk: (Not) Keeping Up with Social Media
Young: Struggling to Keep Behind: Small College Archives with Big Ambitions
