Mini-Theater: Cold Storage in Museums (Presented by Spacesaver)

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Cold storage is essential for the long-term preservation of film, animal pelts, and other materials that tend to deteriorate quickly. Cold storage presents a number of challenges, though, including how to assess and organize collections, how to plan and implement a move, and how to make the most effective use of expensive cooler or freezer space. René Oconnell, the image archivist at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, will discuss how she and her colleagues consolidate, organize, and store materials that require cold storage.

Participants will learn:
  • which visual media need to be stored in cool or cold conditions
  • how to distinguish between acetate and nitrate film
  • how to plan and implement a move to cold storage
  • how to monitor and troubleshoot common issues with coolers and freezers
  • how to make the most effective use of expensive cooler or freezer space
